RWS-1301: Rhetoric and Writing Studies
The goal of RWS 1301 is to develop students’ critical thinking skills in order to facilitate effective communication in all educational, professional, and social contexts. This effective communication is based on an awareness of and appreciation for discourse communities as well as knowledge specific to subject matter, genre, rhetorical strategy, and writing process.
English 1301: Expository English
This course emphasizes intensive study of and practice in writing processes, from invention and researching to drafting, revising, and editing, both individually and collaboratively. Emphasizes effective rhetorical choices, including audience, purpose, arrangement, and style. Focuses writing the academic essay as a vehicle for learning, communicating, and critical analysis. Students study literary models in order to learn different approaches to writing. Although a basic essay format will be introduced, students are encouraged to develop their own writing styles.
English 1302: Research Writing and Literary Analysis
This course is an introductory literature course that also includes the fundamentals of research writing and a documented research paper. The literature section of the course covers fiction and drama, and it seeks to develop critical reading skills along with an appreciation for literature. In the research section of the course, students will learn to use information from research sources appropriately including locating appropriate sources, and selecting and interpreting information relevant to a thesis. In addition, students will write a paper which integrates the student’s own ideas and words with those of sources; document sources of information, use the required style; and prepare a works cited page in the text. This class requires a great amount of reading and writing, make sure to keep up with all the assignments.
English 2341: Introduction to Literature
English 2341 is designed to introduce students to three genres of literature: poetry, short story and drama with focus on literary interpretation, further practice in composition and writing literary analyses. Students will be expected to participate in class presentations and discussions and in group activities. Finally, each student is required to complete a research project written in APA style format which meets the Humanities requirements for the Associates of Applied Science Degree programs.
English 0309: College Prep Writing
This course is a developmental class designed to prepare students to write at a college level. Reading comprehension, composition skills, use of English grammar, sentence structure, thesis statement, topic sentence, and other areas will be addressed in this class.
English 111G Rhetoric and Composition
This course is designed to give you practice thinking like a college writer. It is designed to teach you to think about these three basic concepts of writing: Focus, Development, and Clarity and Mechanics. Your task this semester is to understand how these terms relate to a finished college paper and to use them in your own writing. Passing this course means that you can write a college paper that puts each of these concepts into action.
English 203G Business and Professional Communication
The rationale of this course is that students who have already learned basic college composition and research skills must also be able to write appropriate documents for specific business and professional fields. In this course you will learn the basic principles of business and professional writing. At the end of the course, you will be able to use the skills you learned in almost any field in which you may work. In particular, you will better understand how to communicate effectively through writing by learning how to: correspond effectively through E mail messages and memos; write business letters; prepare, write, and present orally a team proposal and design an instructional report in the form of a brochure. You will develop writing and other communication skills needed for the workplace.
